Democrat Shawn Harris, a former U.S. Marine Corps soldier and infantry commander, is running for Georgia’s 14th congressional district, facing a formidable challenge to unseat the controversial Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Since 2021, the Republican congresswoman has managed to retain her seat in the U.S House of Representatives despite clashes with prominent political figures and promoting unfounded conspiracy theories about the federal government. Recently, she claimed that the federal government was responsible for the devastating Hurricane Helene, which resulted in hundreds of fatalities. In a recent interview with the Associated Press (AP), Harris expressed his belief that the people in his district deserve change and more than what Greene has provided.

“I have concrete things that I plan to do and bring back to the district,” Harris told AP. “Marjorie has been up for three and a half years and can’t point to anything that she has actually done.”

Harris’ background is a compelling mix of service, education, and community engagement. Growing up on a farm in Blakely, Georgia, he developed a strong connection to his roots, as noted on his campaign website. His time in the Marine Corps, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant and served in combat in Afghanistan, taught him the importance of duty, honor and leadership – skills that will undoubtedly come in handy when bolstering his campaign efforts.

As he seeks to run for Congress against Greene, Harris is leveraging his experiences and conversations with local residents to address the issues facing his community. His campaign reflects a return to his agricultural beginnings, focusing on the needs and values of Georgians.

Here’s where Harris stands on the issues.

Harris aims to support farmers, U.S. veterans, and economically disadvantaged individuals through a comprehensive plan to enhance community services. As a Democrat, he is focused on broadening healthcare access for Georgians by establishing mental health facilities and creating jobs through a proposed freight hub for the district. His congressional policies emphasize several critical areas, including addressing the dangers faced by mothers with high-risk pregnancies due to a lack of nearby OB-GYNs.

Harris also supports strengthening mental health and substance abuse services to better assist families in rural communities. The Tuskegee University graduate wants to prioritize lowering household costs and expanding broadband access to ensure families have the resources they need.

When it comes to the issue of abortion, the Democrat is determined to push government officials to restore protections similar to those under Roe v. Wade for mothers across Georgia, giving women the individual freedom to make family planning decisions on their own without government interference. Currently, in Georgia, abortion is not completely banned, but it is restricted after the detection of embryonic cardiac-cell activity, typically around six weeks into a pregnancy. The policy will remain in effect while the state appeals the decision.

Furthermore, Harris is committed to prioritizing the national farm bill, which Congress reviews every five years, addressing key issues like crop insurance and food accessibility. Notably, he has received endorsements from figures like Don Westlake, a Republican cattle farmer who previously supported Trump and Greene, who described Harris as a “good person,” a dedicated “family man,” and a “proven leader,” AP noted.

To date, Harris has raised approximately $522,000 for his campaign, but donations could soon rise for the Democrat if he continues to show the American people how he’ll effectively implement his ambitious plan to push Georgia forward.
